Top of the Rock wedding elopement

Top of the Rock Elopement | Hilary + Bryce

When Hilary and Bryce told me they were flying in for a sunset Top of the Rock elopement that started at the Beekman Hotel and ended with cocktails in the West Village, I knew we were in for something special. This wasn’t just any NYC elopement – it was a perfectly planned day that hit every iconic Manhattan moment you could want.

Getting ready at one of the city’s most elegant hotels, capturing chic photos in Central Park, then saying vows 850 feet above the city with golden hour and the Empire State Building as your backdrop? That’s not just a wedding day, that’s a full New York experience.

Tips for a Top of the Rock Elopement That Actually Works

I’ve shot at plenty of NYC observation decks, and here’s the thing about Top of the Rock – it’s not just about the Instagram moment. This venue offers wedding ceremonies with panoramic views of the city, located on the 70th floor of Rockefeller Center, and the logistics actually make sense for couples who want something intimate but unforgettable.

Top of the Rock gives couples access to panoramic NYC skyline views, but of course with amazing views also comes the likelihood of tourist chaos. Some tips about planning an actually intimate Top of the Rock elopement, tourists notwithstanding:

  1. Timing Matters: You’ll need to make your way up 66 flights in the queue, so factor in time for that. Golden hour ceremonies work best for light, but I’d recommend getting up there 30-60 minutes ahead of the actual golden hour so your ceremony will be at least somewhat less crowded.
  2. Location, Location, Location: We beelined to the second top-most deck, then blocked off a corner as best we could. Having the corner means we at least had two sides of panoramic views, with other visitors intruding only from two other sides. (Luckily, when they saw a ceremony happening, most would quickly steer clear.) Also, having zero guests kept it much more simple.
  3. Weather is Everything: It’s an outdoor observation deck, so have a backup plan. This couple lucked out with a perfect day, but NYC weather can change fast.

This Top of the Rock elopement worked because these two understood their priorities. They wanted chic, they wanted NYC, and they wanted an experience that felt authentic to them as a couple. They didn’t try to recreate someone else’s wedding or follow trends that didn’t fit their style. Instead, they picked venues that reflected their taste and created a timeline that let them actually enjoy their day.

The result? Images that look like them, not like a generic NYC wedding shoot. And honestly, that’s what makes the difference between a good elopement and a great one.
