How to Apply For a Marriage License in NYC
If you’re set on getting married in New York City, you must first apply for a marriage license in NYC at one of the borough City Clerk’s Offices (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx or Staten Island) or elsewhere in New York State (such as Long Island or upstate). The marriage license application process is done in two parts, one online and one in person. Here’s how to apply for a marriage license NYC.
No more than 60 days before your ceremony date, you must obtain a marriage license. If you are planning to get your marriage license in New York City, you can schedule an online or in-person marriage license appointment via Project Cupid. New appointments are released three weeks out on Mondays, 9am EST sharp.
Before your appointment, you must also fill out an online form with your personal details (e.g. names, address, etc.).
Where to Go to Get a Marriage License:
If you scheduled an in-person appointment, you’ll then go to your chosen Marriage Bureau during your appointment time. There is a Marriage Bureau in each borough (see all locations), but the Manhattan branch is located at 141 Worth Street. The Manhattan location is open Monday-Friday, 8:30am to 3:45pm, with the exception of 12-1pm for a lunch break. Typically the busiest time is around the noon lunch-hour, and all day on Friday. If you can, I’d recommend going earlier in the day (before 10am) sometime Monday-Thursday.
If you scheduled a virtual appointment, click the video meeting link provided at your appointment time. Everything will be conducted virtually during this appointment. Note that you and your partner must physically be together and in New York state during this virtual appointment.
What to Bring to a Marriage License Appointment:
Both parties must bring government-issued photo IDs that show your photo, name, date of birth (you must be 18 or older to get married in the U.S.) and address, such as a passport or driver’s license (see their list of accepted IDs).
Cost of a Marriage License in New York:
Marriage licenses cost $35, and can be paid via credit card or money order. Note that the cash is not accepted.
