There’s a certain kind of magic that happens when you mix nostalgia, movement, and real emotion—and that’s exactly what we set out to capture with these Hong Kong wedding photos inspired by 80s film in the heart of NYC’s Chinatown.

From the beginning, Tia and Alex knew they didn’t want traditional wedding portraits. Instead, as film buffs, they were drawn to Wong Kar-Wai’s aesthetic and Hong Kong wedding photos that felt cinematic, raw, and alive with motion blur, neon glow and fleeting moments. Together, we created a plan to capture shots inspired by the mood and visual language of the 1980s and classic Hong Kong cinema.

The couple and I met up in Chinatown and let the environment shape the shoot: glowing storefronts, streetlights and lit paper lanterns, the headlights of oncoming cars. Instead of controlling every frame, we followed the Chinatown energy wherever it took us.

Why Chinatown was the Perfect Setting for These 80s Wedding Photos

Chinatown gave us the closest thing to a Hong Kong backdrop without leaving the city. The density, the signage, the layered textures—it all naturally supports the look and feel of Hong Kong wedding photos.

But just as important as location was timing. We waited for blue hour, when the sky turns deep blue and artificial light starts to take over. This is where 80s wedding photos truly come alive. Skin tones pick up neon hues, shadows soften, and everything feels cinematic without trying too hard.

The brides moved through the streets instead of posing in them. Running across intersections, stopping under fluorescent lights, laughing mid-step: real movement, documented in a way that reflects the essence of Hong Kong wedding photos.

How to Create Hong Kong Wedding Photo Aesthetic

To create authentic wedding photos with an 80s feel, I focused on a few key approaches:

Ambient light from storefronts and street lamps for depth and color
Motion blur and grain to keep images feeling imperfect and alive
Exaggerated freedom of movement. It feels silly at first, but having license to just run around and be free provides the movement so critical to these shots
Altered editing, with a teal and orange color grade, increasing grain, lowering clarity and lifting blacks for a hazy quality
