Engagement Photos at The Met Museum | Teresa + Elijah

Looking for engagement photos at The Met that are elegant without feeling stiff or overly formal? Teresa and Bao’s engagement session at the Metropolitan Museum of Art proves you can get gorgeous photos while keeping things totally relaxed. These two are regulars at The Met (it’s in regular rotation for date nights), so we crafted a session that felt more a regular couples’ visit than a traditional photo shoot.

Why The Met Actually Works Great for Engagement Photos

Reasons I love photographing engagement photos at The Met:

  • Incredible architecture that makes every photo look expensive
  • Amazing natural light (seriously, those windows are perfect)
  • Cool art everywhere you turn
  • It’s indoors, so weather-proof location

Plus, if you’re into art like Teresa and Bao, you’re already comfortable there. It just makes sense.

Now, the one reason I dislike shooting engagement photos at the Met: they’re technically not allowed. Visitor guidelines prohibit “unauthorized photoshoots and staged photography” — and that includes engagement and wedding photography. That being said, “non-flash photography and video for personal use is allowed in most galleries unless otherwise noted.” So as long as you are up for doing an on-the-go, guerilla-style shoot, you may be able to pull it off.

How We Made It Happen

Knowing that stage photography was not allowed made it easy to lean into more documentary-style engagement photos at The Met. What does that mean? We basically documented their regular museum visit, just with a camera along for the ride. No lighting setups, no posing in front of each painting, no blocking other visitors. Just two people who love this place doing their usual thing.

We went right when the museum opened the morning, and had already planned our route prioritizing the exhibits they loved the most. This minimized the likelihood of random people in their photos, plus it meant we would capture the most important shots first (you know, just in case we did get stopped at some point). I caught them having real conversations about the art, getting excited about pieces they hadn’t seen in a while, and just being themselves. Way better than, “Okay, now look at me and smile.”

And then, to cap it all off, sharing a Nathan’s hot dog from the cart outside. It doesn’t get any more real than that.

Real Talk: How to Actually Do Engagement Photos at The Met

Want your own engagement photos at The Met? Here’s what actually works:

  • Don’t Go During Tourist Season: Weekday mornings are your friend. Fewer people, more space to move around.
  • Know Someone Who Knows the Rules: Work with a photographer who’s done this before and knows how to be respectful while still getting great shots.
  • Pick Spots That Mean Something to You: Teresa and Bao had their favorite galleries. If you’re just picking random spots, it shows.
  • Let It Flow: The best engagement photos at The Met happen when you’re just enjoying the museum. Don’t overthink it.

Engagement photos work best when they don’t feel like “engagement photos” at all. When you’re somewhere you love, doing something you enjoy, with someone you want to marry – that’s when the magic happens. They weren’t worried about perfect poses or making sure every shot was Instagram-ready. They were just hanging out in a place they love. And guess what? Their photographs look incredible because they were genuinely having a good time. When you’re relaxed and having fun, it shows — even when you’re breaking the rules a little bit.
